Firm Profile

Founded in 2001 by Ted Lott, AIA, Lott3Metz Architecture, LLC exists to raise the standard of architectural design in its primary arenas of Urban, Health, & Home. Urban Design, a constant fascination of Lott’s since his work in the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan. It also played a strong part in the decision to locate Lott3Metz in the Heartside Historic District of downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. “We needed to make an immediate and definitive statement to our current and future clients about our commitment to the city and the neighborhood,” says Lott. “We’ve been fortunate to acquire some projects in the neighborhood – both for-profit and volunteer – that have enabled us to fully immerse ourselves in the work while keeping the design informed and valid on the street,” he concluded.

Relationships

Mies van der Rohe once said, "Architecture starts when you carefully put two bricks together." With that in mind; Ted Lott opines, “The business of architecture starts when you carefully put two people together. On a day to day basis, we’re all about our relationships. From working relationships with contractors nationwide to our non-traditional alliances with designers of all trades, we can access a wide variety of information and expertise on behalf of our clients,” Lott continues. These relationships enable Lott3Metz to tailor the service team to the specific needs of the client and the client’s project with an emphasis on flexibility and innovation. Each project is different; every Lott3Metz project team is uniquely designed to meet project’s specific needs.

Design

While a modern sensibility is evident in all of Lott3Metz’s work, a rigid design ideology is not evident at the firm. “As a designer, I strive to look beyond the bounds of the design problem in front of me in an effort to allow non-architectural disciplines to inform my work,” Lott states. “The hope is that my intellectual and cultural grazing contributes to a more open design process that will enrich the built work.” “Ultimately,” he continues, “regardless of who is designing what for whom; the built work is where design succeeds or fails. We always keep construction in mind with the end user's comfort and joy as the final goal in all that we do.”

Services

First and foremost, Lott3Metz is an architecture firm supplying high quality architectural design with superlative attention to the client’s need. With its concentration in Urban Design, Lott3Metz offers community and master planning with expertise in streetscape and infill design. In Healthcare Design, Lott3Metz offers design and planning services for both hospitals and outpatient facilities. Looking beyond the bounds of traditional architectural service, Ted Lott sees clients with more divergent needs. “We provide many of the services that one would expect from a traditional architecture firm – architecture, engineering, interior design – but, more and more, clients come to us wanting the design to be integrated across design disciplines.” “The obvious example is building signage.” Lott suggests, “Beyond that, we’re talking about interactive kiosks, web design, and CD based tutorials.” Lott3Metz directs the entire process. “We’re just starting to scratch the surface of what is possible by bringing other design disciplines to the table. We’re ready to get to work.”
